Butte Healing Arts Center

Butte Healing Arts Center is the naturopathic practice of Dr. Shahab Samieian, N.D. and Kathlyn Swann, L.Ac., C.A., Diplomate Acupuncture.

Dr. Samieian graduated from Bastyr University in Seattle, Washington in 1993. Soon after, he established the Butte Healing Arts Center in Butte, Montana. He has been the Director of that naturopathic medical practice since 1994.

Dr. Samieian has been trained to perform Chelation Therapy by the American College for the Advancement of Medicine and by the International Society of Chelation Technicians.

Chelation Therapy

Taken from the Greek word chele meaning "claw," the word chelation refers to the way the therapy binds heavy metals, toxins, and metabolic wastes in the bloodstream. The chelating agent, EDTA, is an amino acid which has negative charges associated with it. Once inside the body it looks for positively charged molecules such as lead, iron, mercury, cadmium and calcium.

Calcium is an important and essential mineral in bones and teeth. However, calcium deposited in blood vessels can cause hardening of the arteries and aids in
the formation of a plaque that can lead to heart attacks and strokes. Calcium deposited in joints can cause joint deformity and arthritis.

Chelation therapy looks for metastatic calcium, meaning calcium that is outside of bone and teeth. In other words, EDTA removes calcium from areas where calcium does not belong.

Thermograms which show heat pictures of body parts taken before and after chelation treatments reveal that areas of impaired circulation are restored to normal by this efficient functioning of EDTA. In addition to EDTA, several other nutritional vitamins and minerals are added to the intravenous mixture. All the B vitamins (B1,B2,B3,B5,B6,B12, folic acid) are included to reduce homocysteine levels, which is an independent cardiovascular risk factor. Magnesium is also added to improve peripheral blood flow, to improve vascular tone, to reduce vascular spasm and to reduce platelet aggregation. Vitamin C is included in the chelation mixture to act as an antioxidant and to increase HDL (good cholesterol).

Chelation therapy reverses hardening of the arteries. It was introduced in the US in 1948 after its development in Germany in the early 1930s. Over 60 years of research validates the use of this therapy for chronic degenerative diseases.

Heart Health

The plaque on arterial walls is comprised of fats, collagen, fibrin, mucopoly saccharides, cholesterol and foreign proteins. Calcium is the glue that holds these clogging substances together. When EDTA plucks the calcium from artery plaque, the clogging material falls apart and flows out of the body through the bloodstream. In this way, chelation therapy helps widen the arteries and improve blood flow.

Elmer Cranton, MD, co-author of Bypassing Bypass, indicates that chelation therapy results in a 75 to 95 percent success rate in improving blood flow in patients with clogged arteries. Chelation therapy is an effective and natural alternative to angioplasty and bypass surgery.

Diabetes and Leg Ulcers

Diabetes often leads to poor circulation. Diabetics are prone to having their blood vessels clog with fat, and 98 percent of the diabetic victims suffer complications such as cataracts, heart disease, kidney damage, blindness and gangrene. Chelation therapy restores normal blood flow to damaged organs. With proper circulation the function of the organ is restored.

Metals Poisoning

Chelation therapy is probably best known for treating heavy metal poisoning, such as lead. In fact, the FDA recognizes chelation therapy as the most effective treatment for heavy metal toxicity. Chelation therapy is also effective in the removal of mercury an dother heavy metals from the body.

Macular Degeneration

In this arteriosclerotic disease blood is prevented from reaching the central part of the retina through the choroid capillaries.A blind spot results int he part of the vision that is used for looking directly at an object. Then the vicitim can no longer read, see the colors of objects or recognize other people. Chelation therapy restores circulation to the affected area.

Alzheimer's Disease

Chelation therapy also helps remove aluminum from the brain. Aluminum has been linked to Alzheimer's Disease. According to Drs. H. Richard Casdorph and Morton Walker, authors of Toxic Metal Syndrome: How Metal Poisioning Can Affect Your Brain, chelation therapyhas been shown to help at least 50 percent of elderly people with Alzheimer's who have tried it. They are documented as showing greater mental clarity, improved memory and increased I.Q. It works best, the authors point out, in patients with early-stage Alzheimer's.

Administration

Before receiving chelation therapy, the doctor performs a thorough physical examination including blood work. During therapy, the patient sits comfortably in a chair for one and a half to three hours while the EDTA is admistered intravenously. The treatment is often given once or twice a week for approximately 20 weeks. The usual number of treatments is 30, some requiring less and some requiring more. The exact number of treatments depends on the severity of the problem. One treatment a month following the initial course is recommended.

On the day of treatment, it is important to eat a meal containing protein such as eggs, cheese, meat or beans. It is also recommended that the patient not take any mineral supplements such as calcium. Patients should take any prescription medications on the day of treatment. Patients are advised to take a good multivitamin and mineral supplement on the days they do not receive chelation therapy.

 Ozone Therapy

Ozone is a highly reactive therapeutic agent. When administered properly, it can initiate a series of biological reactions in the body. These reactions are the basis for the administration of ozone therapy in a medical facility. It is well known that all chronically ill patients produce insufficient amounts of energy. All the cells of the body have been shown to increase their energy production (ATP) by as much as 40 percent after exposure to ozone.

European physicians and researchers have been studying the effects of ozone for 20 years. Dr. V. Bocci, professor of physiology at the University of Siena, has discovered that ozone can increase the production of cytokines in the body. Cytokines are important components in regulating the immune system.

Ozone is also an important antimicrobial agent. Ozone has been used since World War I for its antibiotic properties. Today, many cities such as Los Angeles use ozone for their water purification. The removal of toxins in nature is done through ozone production. The fresh scent one smells after a thunderstorm is due to high amounts of ozone production. Without proper toxin removal in the human body, cells will degenerate and die. Through its oxidizing power, ozone helps the body remove cells damaged by viruses or cancer.

Otto Warburg, who won the Nobel Prize in Medicine for his cancer research, states "Cancer has only one prime cause. It is the replacement of normal oxygen respiration by an anaerobic (i.e. oxygen-deficient) cell respiration."

Many illnesses such as cancer, autoimmune disorders such as lupus or MS, and fibromyalgia have one thing in common: low levels of oxygen. Ozone provides the body the necessary oxygen required to treat these illnesses.

Treating Cancer with Ozone

Cells damaged by cancer have an outer shell that is different from healthy cells. Through a complex chemical reaction, ozone can penetrate these cells and through an oxidation process will destroy these cells. Normal cells have a different protective layer and are therefore unaffected by this mechanism.

Arthritis and Pain Management

Ozone has dramatic effects on reducing pain through a process called prolotherapy. A small amount of ozone gas is injected to the area in pain. The gas results in a slight inflammation which subsequently causes a dramatic increase in blood supply to the affected area. Through this process, more nutrients, collagen, and fiber blasts are driven to the area of pain which will result in regeneration of new healthy tissue. "Prolo" is a Latin name for regeneration and rebuilding and the technique has been in use since the time of Hippocrates.

Conditions such as degenerated joints, herniated discs, unresolved whiplash, torn tendons and ligaments can be greatly helped by this procedure. Since ozone is a gas, it can readily diffuse to the surrounding tissue and initiate a healing response to a wide area.

Following the inital injection, the patient may experience a slight amount of soreness. This is due to the desired inflammation which will ultimately result in correcting the damaged tissue. The number of treatments required depends on the severity of the problem. Some patients may require as many as 10 injections to see results, while others can notice improvement after the first injection.

Chronic Infections

There has been a dramatic increase in illnesses that are directly or indirectly related to viral infections. Hepatitis, Epstein-Barr infection, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia and autoimmune disorders can be treated very effectively using ozone therapy. As an antimicrobial agent as well as immune system modulator, ozone delivers a therapeutic benefit unmatched by any other therapy. Unlike antibiotics, ozone will not damage normal cells which make the therapy superior and without side effects.

Applications

Ozone can be administered in many different ways depending on the condition. Small amounts can be injected in joints and connective tissue to help with arthritis and pain. Ear insufflations can be used for chronic sinusitis. Injections into the bloodstream are administered for more chronic illnesses, through a mechanism known as Major Autohemo Therapy.

The most convenient and effective procedure involves using a hyperthermic chamber. Ozone can penetrate through the skin and enter the lymphatic system. The sauna has an additional benefit of detoxifying the body from toxins and metabolic waste.

The number of treatments required depends on the condition. For chronic infections or cancer, the minimum number of treatments is 20.

 Mesotherapy

Mesotherapy is a medical technique devised in 1952 by Frenchman Dr. Michel Pistor to treat such conditions as Rhumatology, Sports Traumatology, infectious diseases, vascular diseases and to improve circulation. Mesotherapy has also been found to be useful to treat cosmetic conditions as well. Cellulite reduction and weight loss can be effectively managed with the use of Mesotherapy. The treatment stimulates the mesoderm, or middle layer of the skin, which in turn helps to disburse the cellulite.

Mesotherapy melts the fat in the skin via painless injections and breaks up the network of connective tissue fibers that form trapping fat cells and resulting in cellulite. Mesotherapy breaks the bands of connective tissues by injecting small amounts of homeopathic medicine immediately beneath the surface of the skin (mesoderm) to break down the cellulite and to improve circulation and lymphatic and venous drainage. Each treatment takes about ten minutes and is not painful. After the treatment patients can return to normal activities. After an initial consultation patients are informed as to how many treatments they will require which is determined by the amount of cellulite and treatment required to remedy the situation. The treatment is permanent and the results are measurable as long as patients do not gain more than fifteen pounds. Legs, buttocks, abdomen, back and arms can be treated with equally good results.

When treating cellulite the big concern is breaking down the connective tissue as opposed to breaking down the fat. Surprisingly, some women have an abundance of cellulite but a small amount of fat. The dimpling becomes apparent due to the formation of these connective tissue bands. After 10 sessions, the cellulite is typically reduced by at least half. Mesotherapy is also used as a fat melting weight loss technique.

 Ultraviolet Blood (UVB) Therapy

Ultraviolet Blood (UVB) Therapy is also known as Photo-oxidation, Photoluminescence, and Extracorporeal Photophoresis. Treatment consists of withdrawing blood from a patient that is then passed through tubing where it is exposed briefly to an ultraviolet light. The treated blood is then directly returned to the patient's bloodstream.

Ultraviolet irradiation of the blood produces the following benefical chemical reactions:
  • Improved micro circulation and oxygenation of tissues
  • Anti-inflammatory effects
  • Stimulation of the immune system
  • Increased tolerance of the body towards radiation or chemotherapy
  • Cardiovascular protection through increased metabolism of cholesterol, uric acid, and glucose
  • Resolution of vascular spasms
  • Powerful anti-infection properties

 Acupuncture

Traditional Chinese Acupuncture is often effective with a surprising range of ailments including headaches, allergies, chronic fatigue, depression, back pain, digestive disorders, joint pain, menstrual disorders, infertility, sleeping problems, asthma, addictions and stress. Acupuncture is helpful for many severe chronic illnesses and complaints that have no easily determined cause and for nagging chronic conditions as well. In fact, the World Health Organization and the National Institutues of Health have recognized over 200 conditions that are treatable with acupuncture.

Acupuncture uses extremely thin needles (about the thickness of two human hairs). Acupuncture needles are sterilized, individually packaged and disposed of after use. Sensations during acupuncture treatment vary from feeling nothing at all to a dull tingling sensation. Most patients find treatments to be very relaxing.

The first visit is called a traditional diagnosis to discuss symptoms or reasons for seeking treatment and to ascertain the patient's expected benefits from treatment. The acupuncturist reviews the patient's health history and performs a physical examination. The therapist uses this information to recommend a course of treatment based on the patient's particular condition. This usually involves weekly or bi-weekly visits for the first six to eight weeks. After these initial treatments, appointments are spread out to every other or every third week, then monthly, then seasonally. The goal is to move the patient toward optimum health as quickly as possible.
